The Classic Stirrer suits a very wide range of cooking applications. It works beautifully in pretty much every cooking vessel - pots, pans, wok and more.
The Classic Stirrer is handmade from selected salvaged and recycled Australian hardwood timbers which are sourced by the maker. The Classic Stirrer is 34 cm (13 1/2 inches) long and 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) wide with a handle thickness of about 1.8 cm (3/4 inch). The working blade is about 15 cm (6 inches) long. The utensil has a gentle curve along the blade and a slight dish in its shape and is canted to either left or right as appropriate. The working tip is very slightly dished but when the Stirrer is at it's working angle, the breadth of the tip of the blade presents mostly a flat area of contact with the surface of the pan ... allowing for forward and backward scraping or spreading.
The Classic Stirrer is an 'all-rounder' and is the most versatile utensil in the Gilmour-designed kitchen range.
Functionally, the Classic Stirrer is lightweight yet with a solid feel and is perfectly balanced. Available in left and right handed versions, it is comfortable for use in either hand ... and can be used reversed. Aesthetically, the Classic Stirrer is slim with sensuous elegance and graceful organic curves ... and is smooth as silk in the hand.
The Classic Stirrer evolved one night out of a need for a better stirring utensil. It is the original cooking utensil I designed and made to fulfil my own needs and is one of my best-selling utensils in face-to-face sales on my long-running market stall in Port Douglas, Australia. This design was first conceived in 2001.
This product listing is for an item which will be selected from available stock ... or made to order. The item shipped will be like the pictures in shape and style but will vary in colour and wood type. The wood used is from select stock which is dried and seasoned and is ultimately suitable for utensil making. Rest-assured, you will receive the best selected stock item of the day.
Care for this utensil is very simple. Don't be scared to use it and wash it in the sink using normal practices ... hot water and dishwashing detergent are fine. Preferably keep it out of the dishwasher, although experience has proven that it won't kill it if the utensil ends up in there occasionally ... though the intense detergent will prematurely harm the surface and finish. Oiling is not really necessary ... but you can oil it if you want.
This utensil is sanded to a very smooth finish and is fully sealed with a penetrating food-neutral resin product. You do not need to oil this item as the sealing process creates an effective moisture barrier which will greatly slow down the oxidation process during the early years of its life. The utensil will last you a very long time and will age beautifully.
THE BACKSTORY ...
"I became really frustrated with lack of suitable cooking utensils available in kitchen stores. There was also the issue that most were made of softwoods which grew black mould in our wet season summers here in tropical northern Australia. It became quickly apparent the only realistic course of action was to make my own. I had a clear mental image of the design I wanted and ... made a prototype the next morning. I was using it that night.
I had no intention of making any number or selling my utensils ... this journey was purely about me. But, after a swag of friends cottoned on to the design during dinner parties ... and giving way too many away for beers ... I decided to start selling handmade utensils and other homewares objects.
This was the first utensil I designed and made ... so, it became my classic ... the Classic Stirrer. The year was 2001." - Bob Gilmour: designer.
